Founded in 1885, Royal Selangor celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. Throughout its long history, the modest enterprise founded by Yong Koon has weathered family feuds, world wars and economic turmoil.
The 1930s was a particularly difficult period as the world went through an economic depression. When demand for traditional ceremonial pewterware was on a decline, Yong Koon and his sons began making European style products for the British and other expatriates. This was an important turning point for the business and laid the foundation for an export market in future years.
Handcrafted limited edition Royal Selangor tea set
In celebration of its heritage of craftsmanship and spirit of innovative design, Royal Selangor has created a limited edition hand made tea set.
Limited to only 125 sets worldwide, the tea set is handcrafted using time-honoured skills passed on from Royal Selangor's founder Yong Koon more than a hundred years ago.
Inspired by designs of the 1930s, the teapot, sugar bowl and creamer are angular in shape and decorated with neat rows of hammer marks that create a delightful pattern on the surface. The geometric shapes are softened with rounded corners and curves that highlight the beauty and malleability of pewter.
Another charming detail is the use of rattan to insulate the handles of the teapot and creamer. They exude a rustic feel and are a charming contrast to the modern design.
Made the traditional way, a pewter sheet is firstly textured by hammering rows of tiny impressions or dimples. The required parts are then cut from the sheet and hand formed. Other appendages such as handle, spout and cover are cast separately, hand hammered and then soldered together. Each process is executed with precision and meticulous care.
Presented in an elegant wooden gift box, this tea set comes together a serialized certificate and a copy of Royal Selangor's coffee table book 'Born and Bred in Pewter Dust' written by the founder's great granddaughter Chen May Yee.
Miniature collectibles for Royal Selangor's 125th Anniversary
Another special collection to commemorate this anniversary is a range of miniatures that celebrate the company's iconic designs.
Miniatures consist of six collectibles.
They include a miniature version of a melon shaped teapot created by founder Yong Koon. A charming story of how the teapot had saved a man's life during World War II can be found in Royal Selangor's book 'Born & Bred in Pewter Dust'. This iconic piece now displayed at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre's Pewter Museum.
Other pieces are an iconic tankard and a stylish water pitcher designed by the company's first chief designer Anders Quistgaard. Approximately 2.5 to 3 cm in height, each miniature bears the 125th Anniversary logo at the bottom.
Popular photoframes of different textures and designs are also part of this collection. From the classic hand hammered frame to the antique finish frame from the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, to the clean and bold Himalaya photoframe, each piece makes a delightful gift or as a personal collection. Affixed with a magnet behind each piece, these attractive magnet frames look great in any home or office.
All six miniatures feature the anniversary logo depicting the significant years of 1885 and 2010. In addition, the collection also comes in a set of three comprising the miniature melon teapot, tankard and pitcher in a gift box. |
